It depends to a certain extent on region and age group. On most US college campuses probably for every guy with hair covering the ear, there are around 25 who have haircuts short enough to expose the ears completely or almost completely. Regular guy’s haircuts, crew cuts and ivy leagues are always in good taste and currently among the most popular. Probably due to the influence of the Disney channel long mop styles with hair covering the eyes are popular among middle school boys, but these styles rapidly decrease in popularity in the high school years as the young men find a difficult time finding a part time or summer job unless they get a regular haircut, and also long hair is inconvenient for athletics. If I had to pick what is currently the most fashionable hairstyle for guys over 18, it would be an ivy league, but that is only my opinion.

[A crew cut is a timeless prep haircut, the photo directly above is from 1946, and yet if the photo was in color, both the guy and the clothes he is wearing could be in the latest J Crew catalog. ]
forward brush cut:

The answer at the link below explains the basic short cuts. The first two links contained therein are quite informative:

The short pomp cuts-crew cut, ivy league, flat top crew cut- are very easy to groom and keep looking well groomed all day which is one reason crew cuts and ivy leagues are popular styles.
1) Towel dry hair.
2)Barely dip fingertips in jar of wax.
3) Transfer wax to palms.
4) Smooth palms over hair.
5) Brush hair off forehead to form short pomp front.
Good Luck!

I think subtle fohawks look pretty nice and I see lot of guys with that kind of style all the time right now.
